Worked solution
Find both square roots of a complex number
Find the square roots of the complex number .
CJC · Example 4
Method 1: Analytical
Answer
and .
Let a square root be , where . Then
Comparing components gives (1) and , hence (2). The division is valid because forces . Substitute (2) into (1):
Reject because is real. Thus and . When , ; when , . The two roots are and . The signs must stay paired.
Method 2: Graphing calculator
Answer
and .
On the calculator shown in the notes, press MODE and highlight a+bi, so results use algebraic form . Enter : the screen shows . Then enter : the screen shows .
The square-root command returns one selected root. Multiply that result by to obtain the other root; one calculator output is not the complete answer to a request for both roots.
Common mistakes
The real function on is strictly increasing and returns a unique nonnegative value. This is a choice of principal root. A nonzero complex number has two algebraic square roots, opposite in sign; zero has just one distinct square root.
Solution notes
The analytical setup , with real, completes the Teacher addition directly in the working. Both methods and both displayed calculator outputs are retained.
