(a)(i) First quotient

Answer

−625+1725i-\dfrac6{25}+\dfrac{17}{25}i.

Multiply by the denominator’s conjugate:

2+3i3−4i=(2+3i)(3+4i)32+42=6+8i+9i+12i225=−6+17i25.\begin{aligned}&\frac{2+3i}{3-4i}\\ & =\frac{(2+3i)(3+4i)}{3^2+4^2}\\ & =\frac{6+8i+9i+12i^2}{25}\\ & =\frac{-6+17i}{25}.\end{aligned}

(a)(ii) Second quotient

Answer

1317−117i\dfrac{13}{17}-\dfrac1{17}i.

Use 4+i4+i to make the denominator real:

3−i4−i=(3−i)(4+i)42+12=12+3i−4i−i217=13−i17.\begin{aligned}&\frac{3-i}{4-i}\\ & =\frac{(3-i)(4+i)}{4^2+1^2}\\ & =\frac{12+3i-4i-i^2}{17}\\ & =\frac{13-i}{17}.\end{aligned}

(a)(iii) Third quotient

Answer

−1710−110i-\dfrac{17}{10}-\dfrac1{10}i.

Use 1+3i1+3i as the conjugate factor:

−2+5i1−3i=(−2+5i)(1+3i)12+32=−2−6i+5i+15i210=−17−i10.\begin{aligned}&\frac{-2+5i}{1-3i}\\ & =\frac{(-2+5i)(1+3i)}{1^2+3^2}\\ & =\frac{-2-6i+5i+15i^2}{10}\\ & =\frac{-17-i}{10}.\end{aligned}

(b)(i) A sum of conjugate reciprocals

Answer

15\dfrac15.

Realise each denominator. Their imaginary parts cancel:

11+3i+11−3i=1−3i10+1+3i10=210=15.\begin{aligned}\frac1{1+3i}+\frac1{1-3i}&=\frac{1-3i}{10}+\frac{1+3i}{10}\\&=\frac2{10}=\frac15.\end{aligned}

(b)(ii) Add a complex quotient

Answer

−135+115i-\dfrac{13}{5}+\dfrac{11}{5}i.

First simplify the quotient, then add corresponding components:

−2+i+3i2−i=−2+i+3i(2+i)5=−2+i+−3+6i5=−135+115i.\begin{aligned}-2+i+\frac{3i}{2-i}&=-2+i+\frac{3i(2+i)}5\\&=-2+i+\frac{-3+6i}5\\&=-\frac{13}5+\frac{11}5i.\end{aligned}

(b)(iii) Add two complex quotients

Answer

−1625−825i-\dfrac{16}{25}-\dfrac8{25}i.

The two real denominators are both 25:

1−2i3+4i+−2−i4+3i=(1−2i)(3−4i)25+(−2−i)(4−3i)25=3−4i−6i+8i225+−8+6i−4i+3i225=−5−10i25+−11+2i25=−1625−825i.\begin{aligned}\frac{1-2i}{3+4i}+\frac{-2-i}{4+3i}&=\frac{(1-2i)(3-4i)}{25}+\frac{(-2-i)(4-3i)}{25}\\&=\frac{3-4i-6i+8i^2}{25}+\frac{-8+6i-4i+3i^2}{25}\\&=\frac{-5-10i}{25}+\frac{-11+2i}{25}\\&=-\frac{16}{25}-\frac8{25}i.\end{aligned}
