Predict a French mark from an English mark

Ten randomly selected students have these French test marks yy and English test marks xx.

xx (English)yy (French)
1920
4243
4433
5256
5150
5367
6673
5668
6077
3743

(i) Obtain the product moment correlation between yy and xx and comment on it.

(ii) Obtain the regression line of yy on xx, correct to 3 decimal places.

(iii) Given that the regression coefficient for xx on yy is 0.66, show by calculation that this line is x=0.66y+13.02x=0.66y+13.02.

(iv) Tom missed the French test but scored 65 in English. Predict a suitable French mark and comment on its reliability.

(i) Interpret correlation in context

Answer

r=0.920r=0.920 (3 s.f.): strong positive linear association.

The source prints r=0.920r=0.920, close to 1. In these paired test scores, students with higher English marks tend to have higher French marks. This is an association in the sample, not proof that taking one test causes the other score.

(ii) Round coefficients to three decimal places

Answer

y=1.283x−8.594y=1.283x-8.594.

The printed full coefficients give y=1.28320802x−8.593984962y=1.28320802x-8.593984962. Rounding to the requested 3 decimal places, rather than 3 significant figures, gives the displayed equation. Retain the full values for the later prediction.

(iii) Use the given reverse coefficient and means

Answer

x=0.66y+13.02x=0.66y+13.02.

The mean point is (xˉ,yˉ)=(48,53)(\bar x,\bar y)=(48,53) and lies on both fitted lines. Using the stipulated reverse slope 0.660.66, write 48=0.66(53)+c48=0.66(53)+c, so c=13.02c=13.02. The source starts this derivation but leaves the completion blank. The calculation uses the coefficient as given; it does not claim 0.66 is the unrounded fitted slope.

(iv) Predict French from English and assess the range

Answer

Predicted French mark 74.874.8 (3 s.f.).

Use yy on xx, since French is being predicted from English:

y=1.28320802(65)−8.593984962=74.814536…≈74.8.\begin{aligned}&y\\ & =1.28320802(65)\\ &{}-8.593984962\\ & =74.814536\ldots\approx74.8.\end{aligned}

The source calls this reliable because 6565 is inside the observed English range 19≤x≤6619\le x\le66 (interpolation) and r=0.920r=0.920 indicates strong positive linear association. These support using the fitted model, but do not guarantee an accurate individual mark. The context should remain comparable to the sampled students; random selection alone does not remove residual variation.

Solution notes

All ten pairs and four source asks retained. Printed correlation, fit, mean point and prediction/reliability rationale preserved. Blank reverse-intercept calculation authored; reliability qualified rather than guaranteed. No printed marks.
