Use symmetry for a half-turn and translate the rotation axis

The region RR is bounded by C:y=ex2C:y=e^{x^2} and y=4y=4.

(i) Find the exact volume when RR is rotated through two right angles about the y-axis.

(ii) Write down the equation of the curve obtained when CC is translated four units in the negative y-direction. Hence find the approximate volume of the solid formed when RR is rotated completely about y=4y=4.

(i) Account for both sides of R

The Teacher emphasises that ex2e^{x^2} is even and RR occupies two quadrants symmetrically about the y-axis. At height y∈[1,4]y\in[1,4], the horizontal strip runs from −ln⁡y-\sqrt{\ln y} to ln⁡y\sqrt{\ln y}. Rotating this whole strip through 180∘180^\circ sweeps a complete disc: its positive and negative halves sweep the two complementary semicircles. Thus there is no extra factor 1/21/2.

(i) Integrate the squared radius

Since x2=ln⁡yx^2=\ln y, V=π∫14x2 dy=π∫14ln⁡y dyV=\pi\int_1^4x^2\,dy=\pi\int_1^4\ln y\,dy. Using integration by parts, V=π[(yln⁡y)14−∫14(1/y)y dy]=π(4ln⁡4)−π[y]14=π(4ln⁡4−3)V=\pi[(y\ln y)_1^4-\int_1^4(1/y)y\,dy]=\pi(4\ln4)-\pi[y]_1^4=\pi(4\ln4-3) cubic units.

(ii) Translate the curve and region

The translated curve is y=ex2−4y=e^{x^2}-4. Moving the whole region and its axis down by 4 preserves the generated volume: rotation of the original region about y=4y=4 becomes rotation of the translated region about the x-axis. Its x-intercepts are ±a\pm a, where a=ln⁡4≈1.177410023a=\sqrt{\ln4}\approx1.177410023; its minimum is −3-3.

(ii) Evaluate the approximate volume

V=π∫−aa(ex2−4)2 dxV=\pi\int_{-a}^{a}(e^{x^2}-4)^2\,dx. The source uses bounds approximately ±1.17741\pm1.17741 and gives 42.642.6 cubic units to 3 significant figures. The squared function is even, so the Teacher also writes V=2π∫0a(ex2−4)2 dxV=2\pi\int_0^a(e^{x^2}-4)^2\,dx. An independent numerical check with the exact bound gives approximately 42.5631759442.56317594, agreeing with the printed answer.

Region under y=4 and above the even curve y=e to the x squared spans both sides of the y-axis. A half-turn fills full discs. For part (ii), translate down 4 so the original y=4 axis becomes y=0 and the same region lies above y=e to the x squared minus 4.

Common mistakes

A half-turn of a region on both sides of its axis can already fill the full solid. Determine the swept region before applying an angle fraction; when translating, move both the region and its axis.
