Choose the outer radius after rewriting in terms of y

Find the value of the volume of the solid formed by rotating the region between y=x2y=x^2 and y=x3y=x^3 about the y-axis.

CJC · Lecture · Example 18

Find bounds and rewrite both curves

The curves meet where x2=x3x^2=x^3, namely x=0,1x=0,1, so the enclosed region has 0≤y≤10\le y\le1 in the first quadrant. There y=x2y=x^2 becomes x=yx=\sqrt y and y=x3y=x^3 becomes x=y3x=\sqrt[3]y. The explicit intersection derivation here is independently authored; the Teacher marks the meeting point (1,1)(1,1) in the sketch.

Identify the outer and inner radii

For 0≤y≤10\le y\le1, y3≥y\sqrt[3]y\ge\sqrt y. Thus outer radius is f(y)=y3f(y)=\sqrt[3]y and inner radius is g(y)=yg(y)=\sqrt y, matching the Teacher annotations. Set V=π∫01[(y3)2−(y)2] dyV=\pi\int_0^1[(\sqrt[3]y)^2-(\sqrt y)^2]\,dy.

Evaluate and round

The source answer is 0.3140.314 cubic units to three significant figures. Independently, V=π∫01(y2/3−y) dy=π[3y5/3/5−y2/2]01=π/10≈0.314159265V=\pi\int_0^1(y^{2/3}-y)\,dy=\pi[3y^{5/3}/5-y^2/2]_0^1=\pi/10\approx0.314159265.

The first-quadrant region between y=x squared and y=x cubed meets at 0 and (1,1). For horizontal washers about the y-axis, cubed root of y is the outer radius and square root of y is inner; volumeπ/10.

Common mistakes

The curve above another in the original y-versus-x graph need not provide the outer radius for rotation about the y-axis. Rewrite as x functions first, then compare horizontal distances.
