Compare modulus integrals using algebra and geometry

Find kk such that ∫−c0∣x−c∣ dx=k∫02c∣x−c∣ dx\int_{-c}^0|x-c|\,dx=k\int_0^{2c}|x-c|\,dx, where cc is a positive constant.

Sketch and remove the modulus

The Teacher advises: draw a diagram. The V-shaped graph has vertex (c,0)(c,0), with ∣x−c∣=c−x|x-c|=c-x for x<cx<c and ∣x−c∣=x−c|x-c|=x-c for x≥cx\ge c. Since c>0c>0, the interval [−c,0][-c,0] lies wholly to the left of the vertex, while [0,2c][0,2c] crosses it.

Evaluate the left integral

∫−c0∣x−c∣ dx=∫−c0(c−x) dx=[cx−x2/2]−c0=c2+12c2=32c2\int_{-c}^0|x-c|\,dx=\int_{-c}^0(c-x)\,dx=[cx-x^2/2]_{-c}^0=c^2+\frac12c^2=\frac32c^2.

Split the right integral and solve

∫02c∣x−c∣ dx=∫0c(c−x) dx+∫c2c(x−c) dx=[cx−x2/2]0c+[x2/2−cx]c2c=12c2+12c2=c2\int_0^{2c}|x-c|\,dx=\int_0^c(c-x)\,dx+\int_c^{2c}(x-c)\,dx=[cx-x^2/2]_0^c+[x^2/2-cx]_c^{2c}=\frac12c^2+\frac12c^2=c^2. Hence 32c2=kc2\frac32c^2=kc^2, and k=3/2k=3/2 because c>0c>0.

Alternative: compare areas

The source labels the left trapezium A1A_1 and the two right triangles A2,A3A_2,A_3. Their areas give 12c(2c+c)=k[12c(c)+12c(c)]\frac12c(2c+c)=k[\frac12c(c)+\frac12c(c)], again k=3/2k=3/2. All three areas are nonnegative; the left trapezium is above the x-axis.

V-shaped modulus graph y=|x−c| has vertex (c,0). The trapezium A1 over[−c,0] has heights 2c andc; triangles A2 and A3 over[0,c] and[c,2c] each have base and heightc. Their areas give k=3/2.

Common mistakes

Split at x=c, where x−c changes sign. A modulus integral is not the modulus of the corresponding signed integral.
