Worked solution

Differentiate a substitution before replacing every dependent term

Substitute y=z−xy=z-x into (1/y)(dy/dx)−1=(x−2)/y(1/y)(dy/dx)-1=(x-2)/y to obtain an equation relating z and x. Solve it and hence give the general solution for y in terms of x.

CJC · Lecture · Example 5

Differentiate and replace all y terms

dy/dx=dz/dx−1dy/dx=dz/dx-1. Since the original equation requires y≠0y\ne0, substitution gives [dz/dx−1]/(z−x)−1=(x−2)/(z−x)[dz/dx-1]/(z-x)-1=(x-2)/(z-x). Multiplying by z−xz-x gives dz/dx−1−(z−x)=x−2dz/dx-1-(z-x)=x-2, hence dz/dx=z−1dz/dx=z-1.

Separate the transformed equation

For z≠1z\ne1, ln⁡∣z−1∣=x+A\ln|z-1|=x+A, hence z−1=±eAex=Bexz-1=\pm e^Ae^x=Be^x. The equilibrium z=1z=1 is restored by allowing B=0B=0. Thus z=1+Bexz=1+Be^x, B real.

Restore the requested variables and original domain

Replacing z=y+xz=y+x gives y=1−x+Bexy=1-x+Be^x. This is the general family on intervals where 1−x+Bex≠01-x+Be^x\ne0, as required by the original denominators. The teacher contrasts this general separable solution with the particular direct-integration solution in Example 6 and the particular substituted solution in Example 7.

Common mistakes

The final answer must use x and y, and the original exclusion y=0 still applies.
