Worked solution

Differentiate an outer negative power

Differentiate 1/(6x2+4x+1)21/(6x^2+4x+1)^2 with respect to xx.

CJC · Lecture · Example 4

Identify the two layers

Let u=6x2+4x+1u=6x^2+4x+1 and y=u−2y=u^{-2}. The source’s “outermost to innermost” guidance means differentiate the negative power first, then multiply by u′=12x+4u^{\prime}=12x+4.

How did this part go?

Apply and simplify the chain rule

dy/dx=−2(6x2+4x+1)−3(12x+4)=−8(3x+1)/(6x2+4x+1)3dy/dx=-2(6x^2+4x+1)^{-3}(12x+4)=-8(3x+1)/(6x^2+4x+1)^3. The denominator base is 6(x+13)2+13>06(x+\frac13)^2+\frac13>0, so the expression and derivative exist for every real xx.

Common mistakes

Do not omit the derivative 12x+4 of the inner quadratic.
