Worked solution

Differentiate an implicit linear-product relation

Find dy/dxdy/dx given that x+xy−2y=5x+xy-2y=5.

CJC · Lecture · Self-Practice 4

Differentiate and collect

Implicit differentiation gives 1+xy′+y−2y′=01+xy^{\prime}+y-2y^{\prime}=0. Therefore (x−2)y′=−(1+y)(x-2)y^{\prime}=-(1+y) and y′=(1+y)/(2−x)y^{\prime}=(1+y)/(2-x), the printed answer.

How did this part go?

Check the excluded input against the relation

The relation gives y=(5−x)/(x−2)y=(5-x)/(x-2) for x≠2x\ne2. At x=2x=2, the original equation would say 2=52=5, so no point was lost. Explicit differentiation gives −3/(x−2)2-3/(x-2)^2, agreeing with the printed implicit form after substituting for yy.

How did this part go?

Common mistakes

The derivative of xy is x dy/dx+y, not just x dy/dx.
