Decompose a linear and irreducible quadratic denominator

Express x2+x(x−1)(x2+1)\frac{x^2+x}{(x-1)(x^2+1)} in the form Ax−1+Bx+Cx2+1\frac A{x-1}+\frac{Bx+C}{x^2+1}. Hence find ∫x2+x(x−1)(x2+1) dx\int\frac{x^2+x}{(x-1)(x^2+1)}\,dx.

Find A, B and C

Clear denominators: x2+x=A(x2+1)+(Bx+C)(x−1)x^2+x=A(x^2+1)+(Bx+C)(x-1). At x=1x=1, 2=2A2=2A so A=1A=1; at x=0x=0, 0=1−C0=1-C so C=1C=1; at x=2x=2, 6=5+(2B+1)6=5+(2B+1) so B=0B=0. Thus the decomposition is 1/(x−1)+1/(x2+1)1/(x-1)+1/(x^2+1).

Hence integrate

∫x2+x(x−1)(x2+1) dx=∫(1x−1+1x2+1) dx=ln⁡∣x−1∣+tan⁡−1x+C\int\frac{x^2+x}{(x-1)(x^2+1)}\,dx=\int\bigl(\frac1{x-1}+\frac1{x^2+1}\bigr)\,dx=\ln|x-1|+\tan^{-1}x+C, for x≠1x\ne1. The Teacher identifies the logarithmic-derivative form and the arctangent form separately.
