Worked solution

Use discrete fine rates to choose the feasible solution

Ace borrowed 10 books and 3 audio-visual items. Overdue fines per day are xx cents per book and yy cents per audio-visual item, each a multiple of 5 cents. Four days after the due date, he realises at school that none has been returned. He has kk books and no audio-visual items with him.

Option A: Return these kk books on his way home and the remaining books and audio-visual items the following day; total fine $14.55.

Option B: Return all items the following day; total fine $15.

Using this information, find xx and yy.

Formulate both options in cents

The question already defines x,yx,y. Option A gives 4kx+5(10−k)x+5(3)y=14554kx+5(10-k)x+5(3)y=1455, or 50x−kx+15y=145550x-kx+15y=1455. Option B gives 5(10)x+5(3)y=15005(10)x+5(3)y=1500, or 50x+15y=150050x+15y=1500. Thus y=100−103xy=100-\tfrac{10}{3}x.

Use the saved fine and enumerate candidates

Subtract the Option A equation from Option B: kx=45kx=45. Since xx is a positive multiple of 5 cents and kk is an integer number of books with 1≤k≤101\le k\le10, the candidates are k=1,3,9k=1,3,9. If k=1k=1, x=45x=45 and y=−50y=-50, rejected because a fine is positive. If k=3k=3, x=15x=15 and y=50y=50. If k=9k=9, x=5x=5 and y=250/3=8313y=250/3=83\tfrac13, rejected because yy is not a multiple of 5.

Interpret, verify and state the assumption

Therefore the daily fines are 15 cents per book and 50 cents per audio-visual item, with k=3k=3. Option A checks as 4(3)(15)+5(7)(15)+5(3)(50)=14554(3)(15)+5(7)(15)+5(3)(50)=1455 cents; Option B as 5(10)(15)+5(3)(50)=15005(10)(15)+5(3)(50)=1500 cents. The lecturer’s suggested assumption is constant fines: the model charges the same per-item daily rate throughout these overdue days. The source’s final rejection annotation names xx as the multiple-of-5 condition, but x=5x=5 already satisfies it; the non-multiple is y=8313y=83\tfrac13. The raw line is retained, and this working explicitly corrects that label.

Common mistakes

The product kx is not linear in two unknowns. Use the integer and multiple-of-5 restrictions to enumerate the remaining possibilities; check the restriction on y as well.
