Worked solution

Find axial intercepts using the appropriate coordinate

Find the coordinates where x=t2x=t^2, y=t+2y=t+2, t∈Rt\in\mathbb R, meets the x- and y-axes.

CJC · Lecture · Example 1

Set x=0 for the y-axis

t2=0t^2=0 gives t=0t=0, hence y=2y=2. The y-intercept is (0,2)(0,2).

Set y=0 for the x-axis

t+2=0t+2=0 gives t=−2t=-2, hence x=4x=4. The x-intercept is (4,0)(4,0).

Common mistakes

Setting t=0 only gives the y-intercept in this example; it is not a general intercept rule.
