Worked solution

Choose a committee or choose who is left out

From a group of 11 people, how many ways can one form a committee of (i) 7 people, (ii) 4 people?

CJC · Lecture · Example 7

(i) Choose seven of the eleven people

There are (117)=330\binom{11}{7}=330 committees. No roles or ordering are assigned, so use a combination.

(ii) Choose four of the eleven people

There are (114)=330\binom{11}{4}=330 committees.

How did this part go?

Explain why the two counts agree

Each 7-person committee corresponds to exactly one excluded set of 4 people. Choosing the 7 members is equivalent to choosing the 4 nonmembers. Thus (117)=(114)\binom{11}{7}=\binom{11}{4}, as the source remark explains.

Common mistakes

The committee is a set of people. Do not multiply by 7! or 4! unless distinct roles are subsequently assigned.
