Worked solution

Can one match have two incompatible goal totals?

Let events A and B be the events “scoring no goals” and “scoring 2 goals” in a football match. What is the probability of scoring no goals and 2 goals?

CJC · Lecture · Example 1

Identify an empty intersection

The same goal total cannot be both 0 and 2. Hence A∩B=∅A\cap B=\varnothing and P(A∩B)=0P(A\cap B)=0. These events are mutually exclusive, completing the blank in the Student copy with the Teacher’s printed answer.

Common mistakes

“And” asks for the intersection of the events in the same match, not two separate matches.
