Refit a logarithmic model after finding a recording error

The human resource department of a company is tasked to determine if there is a relationship between the age and cholesterol level of their staff. The following table shows the information on age, xx years, and cholesterol level, yy milligrams per deciliter of blood, mg/dL, for a random sample of 10 members of staff.

Age, xx (years)38643934254637265531
Cholesterol level, yy (mg/dL)205225206192150213190165220181

(i) Draw a scatter diagram for the data. mark

(a) Explain why, in this context, a quadratic model would probably not be appropriate for long term predictions. mark

(b) Explain why the diagram shows that the data may be consistent with the model of the form y=a+bln⁡xy=a+b\ln x. mark

One of the values of yy is recorded wrongly. Indicate the corresponding point on your diagram by labelling it P. mark

Omitting P, use the data for the remaining workers to answer the following questions.

(ii) Calculate the product moment correlation coefficient between ln⁡x\ln x and yy. mark

(iii) Calculate the least squares estimates of aa and bb, for the model y=a+bln⁡xy=a+b\ln x. marks

(iv) Assume that the value of xx at P is correct. Estimate the value of yy for this value of xx. marks

(v) If the cholesterol levels in the above table were recorded in micrograms per litre of blood instead, state whether your answer in (ii) will be different. mark

(vi) The manager wishes to estimate the cholesterol level for an employee who is 22 years old. Comment on the reliability of the estimate. mark

Answer

P is (37,190)(37,190). After omitting P: r=0.951r=0.951, a=−80.3a=-80.3, b=75.7b=75.7, corrected estimate 193193 mg/dL. Positive unit conversion leaves rr unchanged; age 22 requires unreliable extrapolation.

(i) Scatter, models and point P

Plot the ten pairs and label P at (37,190)(37,190), as in the source sketch. Apart from this point, the increasing pattern bends downwards. A concave-down quadratic fit would eventually predict decreasing levels as age increases; this makes that long-term extrapolation inappropriate in the source context. An increasing logarithmic model with b>0b>0 has an increasing value and a decreasing gradient, matching the observed shape. This is a modelling argument for these data, not a universal claim about age and cholesterol.

How did this part go?

(ii) Transform after omitting P

Remove (37,190)(37,190), then calculate the correlation of the remaining nine ln⁡x\ln x and yy values: r=0.9505079663≈0.951r=0.9505079663\approx0.951.

(iii) Least-squares coefficients

Regress yy on u=ln⁡xu=\ln x: y=−80.26390794+75.74467699ln⁡xy=-80.26390794+75.74467699\ln x. Thus a=−80.3a=-80.3 and b=75.7b=75.7 (3 s.f.).

How did this part go?

(iv) Replace the incorrect value

Keeping x=37x=37, use the unrounded fit: y^=−80.26390794+75.74467699ln⁡37=193.243903≈193\hat y=-80.26390794+75.74467699\ln37=193.243903\approx193 mg/dL (3 s.f.).

How did this part go?

(v) Change the units

No change to rr: converting mg/dL to micrograms per litre multiplies every yy by the same positive constant, 10 00010\,000. Positive rescaling leaves the product-moment correlation unchanged.

How did this part go?

(vi) Predict outside the sample

Age 22 lies below the observed age range [25,64][25,64], so the estimate is extrapolation and is not reliable on the evidence of this sample.

Common mistakes

Do not compute the correlation with raw ages when the question asks for ln x. Model behaviour outside the data range needs a separate contextual judgement.

Solution notes

The plotted source point P is (37,190). The source’s quadratic argument is retained as a qualification of a concave-down fit, not a general assertion about every quadratic or a medical prediction.
