Answer

(a) −2/(x2+4)-2/(x^2+4); (b) 1/(1−x2)1/(1-x^2).

(a)

The chain rule gives −2/x21+(2/x)2=−2x2+4\dfrac{-2/x^2}{1+(2/x)^2}=-\dfrac2{x^2+4}, on the original domain x≠0x\ne0.

(b) Method 1: simplify first

On the real domain −1<x<1-1<x<1, rewrite the expression as 12[ln⁡(1+x)−ln⁡(1−x)]\frac12[\ln(1+x)-\ln(1-x)]. Its derivative is 12[1/(1+x)+1/(1−x)]=11−x2\frac12[1/(1+x)+1/(1-x)]=\dfrac1{1-x^2}.

(b) Method 2: direct chain rule

The source labels this longer route not recommended. Let u=(1+x)/(1−x)u=(1+x)/(1-x), so u′=2/(1−x)2u\prime=2/(1-x)^2. Then ddxln⁡u=1uu′2u=u′2u=1(1−x)(1+x)\dfrac{d}{dx}\ln\sqrt u=\dfrac1{\sqrt u}\dfrac{u\prime}{2\sqrt u}=\dfrac{u\prime}{2u}=\dfrac1{(1-x)(1+x)}.
