Answer

(a) x/(x2−a2)x/(x^2-a^2); (b) −2/(4x2+1)-2/(4x^2+1).

(a) Method 1: logarithm law

Rewrite as 12ln⁡(a2−x2)\frac12\ln(a^2-x^2). Its derivative is 12−2xa2−x2=xx2−a2\frac12\dfrac{-2x}{a^2-x^2}=\dfrac{x}{x^2-a^2} on the real domain a2−x2>0a^2-x^2>0.

(a) Method 2: direct chain rule

The source labels this route not recommended: 1a2−x2⋅12(a2−x2)−1/2(−2x)=−xa2−x2=xx2−a2\dfrac1{\sqrt{a^2-x^2}}\cdot\frac12(a^2-x^2)^{-1/2}(-2x)=-\dfrac{x}{a^2-x^2}=\dfrac{x}{x^2-a^2}.

(b)

The chain rule gives 11+(1/(2x))2(−2(2x)2)=−24x2+1\dfrac1{1+(1/(2x))^2}\left(-\dfrac2{(2x)^2}\right)=-\dfrac2{4x^2+1} for x≠0x\ne0.

Common mistakes

The outer logarithm requires its square-root input to be strictly positive.
