Answer

(a) [(1−6x2)ln⁡x+2x2−1]/(ln⁡x)2[(1-6x^2)\ln x+2x^2-1]/(\ln x)^2; (b) k=−1k=-1; (c) y(1+y2)/[4y−x(1+y2)]y(1+y^2)/[4y-x(1+y^2)].

(a) Method 1: quotient rule

The derivative is (1−6x2)ln⁡x−(x−2x3)/x(ln⁡x)2=(1−6x2)ln⁡x+2x2−1(ln⁡x)2\dfrac{(1-6x^2)\ln x-(x-2x^3)/x}{(\ln x)^2}=\dfrac{(1-6x^2)\ln x+2x^2-1}{(\ln x)^2}, for x>0x>0, x≠1x\ne1.

(a) Method 2: product rule

Write (x−2x3)(ln⁡x)−1(x-2x^3)(\ln x)^{-1}. Its derivative is (1−6x2)(ln⁡x)−1−(x−2x3)(ln⁡x)−2/x(1-6x^2)(\ln x)^{-1}-(x-2x^3)(\ln x)^{-2}/x. Combining terms gives the same single fraction.

(b)

The chain rule gives −sin⁡x/1−cos⁡2x=−sin⁡x/sin⁡2x-\sin x/\sqrt{1-\cos^2x}=-\sin x/\sqrt{\sin^2x}. Since xx is acute, sin⁡x>0\sin x>0, so the denominator is sin⁡x\sin x. Thus the derivative is the constant k=−1k=-1.

(c) Method 1: direct implicit differentiation

Differentiate to obtain (y+xy′)exy=4y(1+y2)y′(y+xy\prime)e^{xy}=4y(1+y^2)y\prime. Rearranging gives dydx=yexy4y(1+y2)−xexy\dfrac{dy}{dx}=\dfrac{ye^{xy}}{4y(1+y^2)-xe^{xy}}. On the curve, substitute exy=(1+y2)2e^{xy}=(1+y^2)^2 and cancel the strictly positive factor 1+y21+y^2 to obtain y(1+y2)4y−x(1+y2)\dfrac{y(1+y^2)}{4y-x(1+y^2)}.

How did this part go?

(c) Method 2: logarithms first

Both sides are positive, so take logarithms: xy=2ln⁡(1+y2)xy=2\ln(1+y^2). Then y+xy′=4yy′/(1+y2)y+xy\prime=4yy\prime/(1+y^2). Multiply through and collect y′y\prime to get [4y−x(1+y2)]y′=y(1+y2)[4y-x(1+y^2)]y\prime=y(1+y^2), giving the same simplified fraction where its denominator is nonzero.
