Extend an inverse-cosine piece periodically and solve a threshold

It is given that

f(x)={cos⁡−1xfor 0≤x<1,π2x−π2for 1≤x<2f(x)=\begin{cases}\cos^{-1}x&\text{for }0\leq x<1,\\\dfrac\pi2x-\dfrac\pi2&\text{for }1\leq x<2\end{cases}

and that f(x)=f(x+2)f(x)=f(x+2) for all real values of xx.

(i) Sketch the graph given by y=f(x)y=f(x) for −3≤x≤4-3\leq x\leq4. marks

(ii) For 0≤x≤40\leq x\leq4, solve the inequality f(x)>π3f(x)>\dfrac\pi3, giving your answer in the exact form. marks

Answer

[0,1/2)∪(5/3,5/2)∪(11/3,4][0,1/2)\cup(5/3,5/2)\cup(11/3,4].

(i)

Repeat the inverse-cosine descent and linear ascent every 2 units. On [−3,4][-3,4], the zeros are (−3,0),(−1,0),(1,0),(3,0)(-3,0),(-1,0),(1,0),(3,0), and the peaks are (−2,π/2),(0,π/2),(2,π/2),(4,π/2)(-2,\pi/2),(0,\pi/2),(2,\pi/2),(4,\pi/2). The joins are continuous and both window endpoints are included. Here cos⁡−1\cos^{-1} means inverse cosine, not reciprocal cosine.

(ii)

On 0≤x<10\leq x<1, cos⁡−1x=π/3\cos^{-1}x=\pi/3 gives x=1/2x=1/2, and the graph exceeds the level for 0≤x<1/20\leq x<1/2. On 1≤x<21\leq x<2, π2x−π2=π/3\frac\pi2x-\frac\pi2=\pi/3 gives x=5/3x=5/3, and the graph exceeds the level for 5/3<x<25/3<x<2. Extend by period 2 and join across the included peak at 2: 0≤x<1/20\leq x<1/2 or 5/3<x<5/25/3<x<5/2 or 11/3<x≤411/3<x\leq4. The four threshold crossings are excluded because the inequality is strict; 0 and 4 are included because their values are π/2\pi/2.

Two panels reconstruct the source full periodic graph on [−3,4] and threshold comparison on [0,4]. Zeros occur at odd integers, peaks π/2 at even integers. The comparison level π/3 meets the graph at 1/2, 5/3, 5/2 and 11/3. The strict solution includes 0 and 4 but excludes all four threshold crossings.
