Compare parts with an arctangent substitution algebraically

The use of a graphing calculator is not allowed in this question.

(i) By using integration by parts, find ∫xtan⁡−1x dx\displaystyle\int x\tan^{-1}x\,dx. marks

(ii) Find ddθ(tan⁡2θ)\dfrac d{d\theta}(\tan^2\theta). Hence use the substitution θ=tan⁡−1x\theta=\tan^{-1}x to find ∫xtan⁡−1x dx\displaystyle\int x\tan^{-1}x\,dx. marks

(iii) Show algebraically that your answers to parts (i) and (ii) differ by a constant. mark

Answer

(i),(ii) 12(x2+1)tan⁡−1x−x2+C\frac12(x^2+1)\tan^{-1}x-\frac x2+C; derivative 2tan⁡θsec⁡2θ2\tan\theta\sec^2\theta; (iii) difference C1−C2C_1-C_2.

(i)

Parts with u=tan⁡−1xu=\tan^{-1}x, dv=x dxdv=x\,dx gives x22tan⁡−1x−12∫x21+x2dx\frac{x^2}2\tan^{-1}x-\frac12\int\dfrac{x^2}{1+x^2}dx. The source callout uses long division: x2/(1+x2)=1−1/(1+x2)x^2/(1+x^2)=1-1/(1+x^2). Hence the answer is x22tan⁡−1x−x2+12tan⁡−1x+C1\frac{x^2}2\tan^{-1}x-\frac x2+\frac12\tan^{-1}x+C_1.

(ii) Derivative

ddθ(tan⁡2θ)=2tan⁡θsec⁡2θ\dfrac d{d\theta}(\tan^2\theta)=2\tan\theta\sec^2\theta.

(ii) Specified substitution

With θ=tan⁡−1x\theta=\tan^{-1}x, x=tan⁡θx=\tan\theta and dx=sec⁡2θ dθdx=\sec^2\theta\,d\theta. The integral becomes ∫θtan⁡θsec⁡2θ dθ\int\theta\tan\theta\sec^2\theta\,d\theta. Use the preceding derivative in parts to get 12θtan⁡2θ−12∫tan⁡2θ dθ\frac12\theta\tan^2\theta-\frac12\int\tan^2\theta\,d\theta. Since tan⁡2θ=sec⁡2θ−1\tan^2\theta=\sec^2\theta-1, this is 12θtan⁡2θ−12(tan⁡θ−θ)+C2\frac12\theta\tan^2\theta-\frac12(\tan\theta-\theta)+C_2. Substitute back to obtain x22tan⁡−1x−x2+12tan⁡−1x+C2\frac{x^2}2\tan^{-1}x-\frac x2+\frac12\tan^{-1}x+C_2.

(iii)

Subtract the two displayed results. Every x-dependent term cancels, leaving C1−C2C_1-C_2, a constant, as required. The printed methods give the same explicit nonconstant expression.
