Answer

(a) 7680; (b)(i) 1296; (ii) 360; (iii) 210.

(a) Couple blocks with numbered seats

Arrange five couples circularly in (5−1)!(5-1)! ways and give each its 2!2! internal spouse orders. Assign a reference person to one of 10 numbered seats. Thus (5−1)! (2!)5×10=7680(5-1)!\,(2!)^5\times10=7680.

How did this part go?

(b)(i) Four independent room colours

Each of four distinct rooms has six choices, giving 64=12966^4=1296.

How did this part go?

(b)(ii) Method 1: select, then assign colours

Choose four of the six colours and assign them to the four rooms: (64) 4!=360\binom64\,4!=360.

How did this part go?

(b)(ii) Method 2: multiply the remaining choices

The four rooms have 6,5,4,3 choices in sequence, so 6×5×4×3=3606\times5\times4\times3=360. The source’s factor annotations refer to “doors” although the question is about bedrooms; the distinct objects being coloured remain the four rooms.

How did this part go?

(b)(iii) Use both selected colours

Choose two colours in (62)\binom62 ways. Either one colour is used in three rooms and the other in one, giving (21) 4!/3!=8\binom21\,4!/3!=8 assignments, or each is used in two rooms, giving 4!/(2!2!)=64!/(2!2!)=6. Thus (62)[(21) 4!/3!+4!/(2!2!)]=15(8+6)=210\binom62[\binom21\,4!/3!+4!/(2!2!)]=15(8+6)=210. Selecting two colours is not sufficient unless both are actually used.

How did this part go?

Common mistakes

Do not count a monochrome assignment after choosing two available colours.

Solution notes

All asks, both source no-repetition methods, complete two-colour cases and marks retained. Source “door” annotation reconciled with the bedroom prompt.
