Answer

r=5/3r=5/3; least n=11n=11.

(i) Method 1: equate adjacent geometric ratios

Write the AP as Tn=a+(n−1)dT_n=a+(n-1)d, d≠0d\ne0, and the GP as un=brn−1u_n=br^{n-1}. Then a+d=ba+d=b, a+4d=bra+4d=br, a+9d=br2a+9d=br^2. Thus (a+9d)(a+d)=(a+4d)2(a+9d)(a+d)=(a+4d)^2, so d(2a−7d)=0d(2a-7d)=0. Rejecting d=0d=0 gives a=7d/2a=7d/2 and r=(a+4d)/(a+d)=5/3r=(a+4d)/(a+d)=5/3.

(i) Method 2: divide the successive differences

b(r−1)=3db(r-1)=3d and br(r−1)=5dbr(r-1)=5d. Since d≠0d\ne0, the first difference is nonzero, so division is valid and r=5/3r=5/3.

How did this part go?

(i) Method 3: eliminate d and solve the ratio quadratic

Use d=(br−b)/3d=(br-b)/3 in br2−br=5dbr^2-br=5d. With b≠0b\ne0, 3r2−8r+5=(3r−5)(r−1)=03r^2-8r+5=(3r-5)(r-1)=0. The root r=1r=1 would give 3d=03d=0, so reject it and retain r=5/3r=5/3.

How did this part go?

(ii) Calibrate and check the integer threshold

From a=7a=7 and b=a+d=9b=a+d=9, d=2d=2. The difference is Dn=9(5/3)n−1−2n−5D_n=9(5/3)^{n-1}-2n-5. It increases for n≥1n\ge1, since Dn+1−Dn=6(5/3)n−1−2>0D_{n+1}-D_n=6(5/3)^{n-1}-2>0.

nD_n (approximately)
10868.06
111461.4
122451.7

Thus the least n with Dn≥1000D_n\ge1000 is 1111.

Common mistakes

The AP’s nonzero common difference rules out the apparently possible GP ratio 1.
