Answer

x=−1, 2, 6x=-1,\ 2,\ 6.

Find a linear factor

Let f(x)=x3−7x2+4x+12f(x)=x^3-7x^2+4x+12. Then f(−1)=−1−7−4+12=0f(-1)=-1-7-4+12=0, so (x+1)(x+1) is a factor.

How did this part go?

Divide by x + 1

The quotient is x2−8x+12x^2-8x+12. In long division, subtract x3+x2x^3+x^2 to leave −8x2+4x+12-8x^2+4x+12; subtract −8x2−8x-8x^2-8x to leave 12x+1212x+12; subtract 12x+1212x+12 to leave remainder zero.

How did this part go?

Factor the quotient

(x+1)(x2−8x+12)=(x+1)(x−2)(x−6)=0(x+1)(x^2-8x+12)=(x+1)(x-2)(x-6)=0. Hence x=−1x=-1, 22 or 66.
