CJC · Discussion · Question 8

Answer

−y2/3-y^{2/3}, with real y∉{−1,0,1}y\notin\{-1,0,1\}.

Keep the original domain

Using real cube roots, negative powers require y≠0y\ne0. The denominator vanishes at y=±1y=\pm1, so also exclude these values.

How did this part go?

Factor the numerator and cancel

y2/3−y−2/3=y2/3(1−y−4/3)=−y2/3(y−4/3−1)y^{2/3}-y^{-2/3}=y^{2/3}(1-y^{-4/3})=-y^{2/3}(y^{-4/3}-1). Hence the quotient is −y2/3-y^{2/3} on its original domain.

Common mistakes

Cancellation does not restore values excluded by the original denominator.
