Worked solution

Calibrate exponential bacterial growth

In a favourable environment, bacteria increase at a rate proportional to the number present. There are 1 000 0001\,000\,000 at a certain time and 2 000 0002\,000\,000 one hour later. Find the number present four hours later.

Answer

1.6×1071.6\times10^7 bacteria, four hours after the first observation.

Set up and solve the growth equation

Let x(t)x(t) count bacteria, taking t=0t=0 at the first observation and measuring tt in hours. Then dx/dt=kxdx/dt=kx with k>0k>0. Separation gives ln⁡x=kt+C\ln x=kt+C, so x=Aektx=Ae^{kt}. The initial value gives A=106A=10^6.

How did this part go?

Use the doubling observation

x(1)=2×106x(1)=2\times10^6 gives ek=2e^k=2, so k=ln⁡2k=\ln2 and x(t)=106 2tx(t)=10^6\,2^t. At t=4t=4, x=16×106=1.6×107x=16\times10^6=1.6\times10^7. This follows the printed solution in measuring four hours from the first observation.

State the time origin so “four hours later” is applied consistently.
