Find a positive fixed point and prove decrease above it

Positive real terms satisfy xn+1=2xn+1x_{n+1}=2\sqrt{x_n+1}.

(i) If the sequence converges, show its limit is 2+222+2\sqrt2.

(ii) Prove xn+1<xnx_{n+1}<x_n whenever xn>2+22x_n>2+2\sqrt2.

Answer

Conditional limit 2+222+2\sqrt2; terms above it decrease at the next step.

(i) Solve the nonnegative fixed-point equation

If xn→ℓx_n\to\ell, continuity gives ℓ=2ℓ+1\ell=2\sqrt{\ell+1}, with ℓ≥0\ell\ge0. Squaring yields ℓ2−4ℓ−4=0\ell^2-4\ell-4=0, so ℓ=2±22\ell=2\pm2\sqrt2; the negative root is inadmissible. Hence ℓ=2+22\ell=2+2\sqrt2.

(ii) Compare the next term with the current one

Let A=2+22A=2+2\sqrt2 and B=2−22<0B=2-2\sqrt2<0. For x>Ax>A, (x−A)(x−B)>0(x-A)(x-B)>0, so x2>4(x+1)x^2>4(x+1). Both sides to be compared are positive, hence x>2x+1x>2\sqrt{x+1}. With x=xnx=x_n, this gives xn+1<xnx_{n+1}<x_n. The source sign graph of 2x+1−x2\sqrt{x+1}-x shows the same negative region beyond AA.

A fixed-point calculation identifies a possible limit; it does not alone prove convergence.
