Absolute-value inequalities

Without using a calculator, solve the following inequalities.

(b) ∣x2−8∣≥4|x^2-8|\geq4.

Answer

(a) (−4,7)(-4,7). (b) (−∞,−23]∪[−2,2]∪[23,∞)(-\infty,-2\sqrt3]\cup[-2,2]\cup[2\sqrt3,\infty).

(a)

−11<2x−3<11-11<2x-3<11, hence −8<2x<14-8<2x<14 and −4<x<7-4<x<7.

(b)

x2−8≥4x^2-8\geq4 or x2−8≤−4x^2-8\leq-4. Thus x2≥12x^2\geq12 or x2≤4x^2\leq4. Equivalently ∣x∣≥12|x|\geq\sqrt{12} or ∣x∣≤4|x|\leq\sqrt4. Therefore x≤−12x\leq-\sqrt{12}, −2≤x≤2-2\leq x\leq2, or x≥12x\geq\sqrt{12}.
