Worked solution

Calculate correlation and investigate a radiation outlier

The data show the intensity II of radiation from a substance after time tt.

ttII
0.23
0.43.5
0.61.3
0.80.6
1.00.4
1.20.2

(i) Use a suitable diagram to explain why the product moment correlation coefficient between II and tt is negative and not very close to −1-1.

(ii) By using the formula for rr, calculate the product moment correlation coefficient between tt and II.

(iii) State the coordinates of a point in the diagram in (i) which does not seem to follow the linear trend. If it is removed, without any calculations, explain why rr is closer to −1-1.

(i) Explain the sign and imperfect fit

Answer

The overall scatter falls as tt increases, but the points do not all lie close to one falling line.

Plot tt horizontally and II vertically, keeping all six pairs. In particular, (0.4,3.5)(0.4,3.5) sits above the main falling trend. The source directs you to the six-step plotting procedure in Example 1 and identifies time as explanatory and intensity as response. The first pair is (0.2,3)(0.2,3), not (0.2,3.5)(0.2,3.5). The source plot shows the endpoints 0.2 and 1.2 on the time axis and intensity extrema 0.2 and 3.5. This reconstruction labels a true zero origin. The sign follows the overall downward association; the visible blank explanatory answer is completed here from the supplied data.

(ii) Obtain the paired-data totals

Answer

n=6n=6, ∑t=4.2\sum t=4.2, ∑I=9\sum I=9, ∑t2=3.64\sum t^2=3.64, ∑I2=23.5\sum I^2=23.5, ∑tI=3.9\sum tI=3.9.

Keep tt in L1 and II in L2. Press STAT, choose CALC, then 2:2-Var Stats. Enter L1 as Xlist with 2nd 1, and L2 as Ylist with 2nd 2. Highlight Calculate, then ENTER; scroll up/down for all totals. Map calculator xx to tt and yy to II. The source screenshots also show tˉ=0.7\bar t=0.7, St=0.3741657387S_t=0.3741657387, σt=0.3415650255\sigma_t=0.3415650255, and Iˉ=1.5\bar I=1.5. The correlation formula uses the displayed sums, not a mixture of sample and population standard deviations.

How did this part go?

(ii) Substitute into the printed formula

Answer

r=−0.907r=-0.907 (3 s.f.).

Use the required formula rather than only reporting a calculator correlation:

r=3.9−(4.2)(9)/6[3.64−4.22/6][23.5−92/6]=−2.4(0.7)(10)=−0.907114….\begin{aligned}&r\\ & =\frac{3.9-(4.2)(9)/6}{\sqrt{[3.64-4.2^2/6][23.5-9^2/6]}}\\ & =\frac{-2.4}{\sqrt{(0.7)(10)}}\\ & =-0.907114\ldots.\end{aligned}

The printed worked value is −0.907-0.907 to 3 significant figures. The source notes that a direct calculator method for rr will be illustrated in later regression examples; that does not replace the formula requested here.

How did this part go?

(iii) Reason about removal without recalculating

Answer

Remove (0.4,3.5)(0.4,3.5). The remaining points lie closer to a falling straight line, so rr is closer to −1-1.

The remaining scatter still falls as time increases but is less dispersed around a negative linear trend. This is the graphical explanation requested; a new numerical coefficient is unnecessary. The visible Student answer on PDF page 12 is blank, so this is an authored completion checked against the six exact pairs, not a supplied Teacher answer.

Six exact pairs (time, intensity): (0.2,3),(0.4,3.5),(0.6,1.3),(0.8,0.6),(1,0.4),(1.2,0.2). Overall intensity falls with time; (0.4,3.5) stands above the near-linear falling trend. Both axes start at zero.

Common mistakes

Keep the unusual observation when calculating part (ii). Part (iii) asks for a graphical explanation without recalculating.

Solution notes

Only a Student lecture PDF is supplied. The formula substitution and calculator procedure are printed; the blank explanations in (i) and (iii) are completed explicitly from the data. No marks are printed.
