Worked solution

Recover two unknown observations from a fitted line

When pp and qq are known, the following data give the regression line of yy on xx as y=2x−2y=2x-2.

xxyy
3pp
22
36
6qq
10

(i) Find yˉ\bar y.

(ii) Find ∑xy\sum xy.

(iii) Find pp and qq.

(i) Use the mean-point property

Answer

yˉ=4\bar y=4.

The line passes through (xˉ,yˉ)(\bar x,\bar y). Since xˉ=(3+2+3+6+1)/5=3\bar x=(3+2+3+6+1)/5=3, substitute in the fitted line: yˉ=2(3)−2=4\bar y=2(3)-2=4. This completes the blank Student working; individual observations need not lie on the fitted line.

(ii) Use the regression gradient

Answer

∑xy=88\sum xy=88.

The printed preliminary totals are ∑y=5yˉ=20\sum y=5\bar y=20, ∑x=15\sum x=15, and ∑x2=59\sum x^2=59. Use the gradient b=2b=2:

2=∑xy−(15)(20)/559−152/5=∑xy−6014.\begin{aligned}&2\\ & =\frac{\sum xy-(15)(20)/5}{59-15^2/5}\\ & =\frac{\sum xy-60}{14}.\end{aligned}

Hence ∑xy=88\sum xy=88. The completed substitution and result are authored for the blank working space; the source prints the three preliminary totals.

(iii) Solve two equations

Answer

p=2p=2, q=10q=10.

From ∑y=20\sum y=20, p+2+6+q+0=20p+2+6+q+0=20, so p+q=12p+q=12. From ∑xy=88\sum xy=88,

3p+2(2)+3(6)+6q+1(0)=88⇒p+2q=22.3p+2(2)+3(6)+6q+1(0)=88\quad\Rightarrow\quad p+2q=22.

Subtract the first equation to obtain q=10q=10, then p=2p=2. This completes the Student blank. Do not set every observation equal to 2x−22x-2: regression minimises squared residuals and does not require every point to lie on the fitted line.
