A reciprocal area and the endpoint choice

Example 2 (Self-Reading). The graph y=1/xy=1/x on [1,2][1,2] has nn rectangles of equal width, using right endpoints. Show that their total area is Sn=∑r=1n1n+rS_n=\sum_{r=1}^n\frac1{n+r} and find the exact value of lim⁡n→∞Sn\lim_{n\to\infty}S_n. Teacher check: construct a similar diagram using left endpoints.

CJC · Lecture · Example 2

Right-endpoint sum

The width is 1/n1/n. Right endpoint xr=1+r/nx_r=1+r/n has height 1/(1+r/n)=n/(n+r)1/(1+r/n)=n/(n+r). Multiplying by the width gives rectangle area 1/(n+r)1/(n+r), so Sn=∑r=1n1/(n+r)S_n=\sum_{r=1}^n1/(n+r).

Exact limit

The rectangles converge to the area ∫121x dx=[ln⁡∣x∣]12=ln⁡2−ln⁡1=ln⁡2\int_1^2\frac1x\,dx=[\ln|x|]_1^2=\ln2-\ln1=\ln2.

Left-endpoint construction

At each x=1+r/nx=1+r/n for r=0,…,n−1r=0,\ldots,n-1, draw a horizontal top to the next partition point and vertical sides down to the axis. The first height is f(1)=1f(1)=1 and first area is 1/n1/n, as the Teacher notes. The left total is Ln=∑r=0n−11n+rL_n=\sum_{r=0}^{n-1}\frac1{n+r}. Since 1/x1/x decreases, the left rectangles overestimate and the right rectangles underestimate: Sn<ln⁡2<LnS_n<\ln2<L_n. Both limits are ln⁡2\ln2.

Decreasing reciprocal curve on [1,2]: four right rectangles underestimate, while four left rectangles overestimate.

Common mistakes

Right endpoints do not always overestimate: here the curve decreases, so they underestimate.
