Worked solution

Use definite integration by parts

Evaluate ∫12ln⁡x dx\int_1^2\ln x\,dx exactly.

Choose the parts

Take u=ln⁡xu=\ln x, dv/dx=1dv/dx=1, so du/dx=1/xdu/dx=1/x and v=xv=x. Thus ∫12ln⁡x dx=[xln⁡x]12−∫12x(1/x) dx\int_1^2\ln x\,dx=[x\ln x]_1^2-\int_1^2x(1/x)\,dx.

Evaluate the endpoints

This is (2ln⁡2−0)−[x]12=(2ln⁡2−0)−(2−1)=2ln⁡2−1(2\ln2-0)-[x]_1^2=(2\ln2-0)-(2-1)=2\ln2-1.

How did this part go?

Common mistakes

The boundary term is evaluated at both limits, and the remaining definite integral must also be subtracted.
