Worked solution

Integrate a logarithmic derivative directly

Find the general solution of dy/dx=2x/(x2+1)dy/dx=2x/(x^2+1).

CJC · Lecture · Example 1

Integrate both sides

∫(dy/dx) dx=∫2x/(x2+1) dx\int(dy/dx)\,dx=\int2x/(x^2+1)\,dx, hence ∫1 dy=∫2x/(x2+1) dx\int1\,dy=\int2x/(x^2+1)\,dx. Therefore y=ln⁡(x2+1)+Cy=\ln(x^2+1)+C, where C is an arbitrary real constant. Since x2+1>0x^2+1>0, this solution is defined for every real x.
