Solve the introductory proportional-decay equation

Solve the equation from Section 1, dN/dt=−kNdN/dt=-kN, where k>0k>0.

Separate and restore the equilibrium

For N≠0N\ne0, ln⁡∣N∣=−kt+C\ln|N|=-kt+C, so N=Ae−ktN=Ae^{-kt} with nonzero A. The missing case N=0N=0 also solves the equation, so A may be any real constant. For a positive physical amount, A=N(0)>0A=N(0)>0, and the amount approaches zero without reaching it at finite time in this continuous model.

Common mistakes

Exponential decay of a positive initial amount does not become exactly zero after a finite number of half-lives.
