Maximise an isosceles triangle inscribed in a circle

Example 15 (Self-Reading): An isosceles triangle ABCABC, with AB=ACAB=AC, is inscribed in a fixed circle of radius aa, with ∠BAC=2θ\angle BAC=2\theta. Express its area in terms of θ\theta, and hence show that the area is maximum when the triangle is equilateral.

Form the area using the double-angle identity

Both copies print the complete solution and diagram. For a>0a>0 and 0<θ<π/20<\theta<\pi/2, AB=AC=2acos⁡θAB=AC=2a\cos\theta. Thus A=12AB ACsin⁡2θ=12(2acos⁡θ)2sin⁡2θ=4a2sin⁡θcos⁡3θA=\frac12 AB\,AC\sin2\theta=\frac12(2a\cos\theta)^2\sin2\theta=4a^2\sin\theta\cos^3\theta. The source callout identifies sin⁡2θ=2sin⁡θcos⁡θ\sin2\theta=2\sin\theta\cos\theta.

Differentiate using the product rule

The source labels the product-rule step: dA/dθ=4a2[sin⁡θ⋅3cos⁡2θ(−sin⁡θ)+cos⁡3θcos⁡θ]=4a2cos⁡2θ(cos⁡2θ−3sin⁡2θ)dA/d\theta=4a^2[\sin\theta\cdot3\cos^2\theta(-\sin\theta)+\cos^3\theta\cos\theta]=4a^2\cos^2\theta(\cos^2\theta-3\sin^2\theta).

Reject the excluded endpoint and test the remaining root

Setting the derivative to zero gives cos⁡θ=0\cos\theta=0 or tan⁡2θ=1/3\tan^2\theta=1/3. The first gives θ=π/2\theta=\pi/2, excluded by 0<θ<π/20<\theta<\pi/2. The second gives tan⁡θ=1/3\tan\theta=1/\sqrt3 and θ=π/6\theta=\pi/6. The complete source sign table has derivative positive to the left, zero at π/6\pi/6, negative to the right, with rising, horizontal and falling tangent directions. Thus the area is maximised at θ=π/6\theta=\pi/6.

Finish the requested equilateral conclusion

At θ=π/6\theta=\pi/6, the apex angle is 2θ=π/32\theta=\pi/3. Because AB=ACAB=AC, each base angle is (π−π/3)/2=π/3(\pi-\pi/3)/2=\pi/3. All three angles are 60°, so the triangle is equilateral. This explicit angle argument completes the requested conclusion after the source’s maximum test; it is independently authored.

Isosceles triangle ABC inscribed in a circle of radius a, apex A above equal sides AB and AC. The radius from A to the centre bisects the apex angle into θ and θ. Auxiliary centre-to-C radius and perpendicular-to-AC segment retain the source construction.

Common mistakes

Do not accept θ=π/2: it is outside the nondegenerate triangle domain. The apex angle is 2θ, not θ.
