Answer

A=πabA=\pi ab; ellipsoid volume 4πab2/34\pi ab^2/3; sphere surface area 4πr24\pi r^2.

(a)(i) Use quadrant symmetry and the specified substitution

On the upper half, y=(b/a)a2−x2y=(b/a)\sqrt{a^2-x^2}, so A=4∫0ay dx=(4b/a)∫0aa2−x2 dxA=4\int_0^ay\,dx=(4b/a)\int_0^a\sqrt{a^2-x^2}\,dx. With x=asin⁡θx=a\sin\theta, dx=acos⁡θ dθdx=a\cos\theta\,d\theta and 0≤θ≤π/20\le\theta\le\pi/2, the radical is acos⁡θa\cos\theta. Thus A=4ab∫0π/2cos⁡2θ dθ=2ab[θ+12sin⁡2θ]0π/2=πabA=4ab\int_0^{\pi/2}\cos^2\theta\,d\theta=2ab[\theta+\tfrac12\sin2\theta]_0^{\pi/2}=\pi ab. The integration variable after substitution is θ\theta; one source line mistakenly retains dxdx.

(a)(ii) Rotate the whole symmetric region

The entire ellipse region has both positive and negative y-values. Rotating that whole region through π\pi already sweeps the complete circular cross-sections, so the solid is the full ellipsoid, not half its volume. V=π∫−aab2(1−x2/a2) dx=(2πb2/a2)[a2x−x3/3]0a=4πab2/3V=\pi\int_{-a}^ab^2(1-x^2/a^2)\,dx=(2\pi b^2/a^2)[a^2x-x^3/3]_0^a=4\pi ab^2/3.

(b) Method 1: implicit differentiation

Use the upper semicircle y≥0y\ge0 as the radius. For −r<x<r-r<x<r, y′=−x/yy^{\prime}=-x/y, so 2πy1+x2/y2=2πx2+y2=2πr2\pi y\sqrt{1+x^2/y^2}=2\pi\sqrt{x^2+y^2}=2\pi r. Integrating from −r-r to rr gives S=2πr(2r)=4πr2S=2\pi r(2r)=4\pi r^2. The endpoint derivatives are unbounded, but the combined integrand has the constant limiting value 2πr2\pi r.

(b) Method 2: substitute the explicit semicircle

y=r2−x2y=\sqrt{r^2-x^2} and y′=−x/r2−x2y^{\prime}=-x/\sqrt{r^2-x^2}. Then 2πr2−x21+x2/(r2−x2)=2πr2\pi\sqrt{r^2-x^2}\sqrt{1+x^2/(r^2-x^2)}=2\pi r in the interior, and the same integral gives 4πr24\pi r^2. Rotating only this upper semicircle once generates the sphere surface without counting it twice.

Common mistakes

Rotating the whole symmetric ellipse through pi sweeps the full solid; do not halve the ellipsoid volume.
