Distinguish a logarithm from its absolute-value graph

(i) Find ∫ln⁡(2x−1) dx\int\ln(2x-1)\,dx.

(ii) Sketch y=∣ln⁡(2x−1)∣y=|\ln(2x-1)|, stating asymptotes and axis intercepts.

(iii) Find the exact area bounded by y=∣ln⁡(2x−1)∣y=|\ln(2x-1)|, the x-axis, x=3/4x=3/4 and x=3/2x=3/2.

(iv) Find the volume when the region bounded by y=ln⁡(2x−1)y=\ln(2x-1), the x-axis, x=3/2x=3/2 and x=3x=3 rotates completely about the y-axis.

Answer

Antiderivative (x−12)ln⁡(2x−1)−x+C(x-\tfrac12)\ln(2x-1)-x+C; area 34ln⁡2−14\tfrac34\ln2-\tfrac14; volume 26.926.9 cubic units.

(i) Integrate by parts and divide the rational term

∫ln⁡(2x−1)dx=xln⁡(2x−1)−∫2x/(2x−1)dx=xln⁡(2x−1)−x−12ln⁡(2x−1)+C=(x−12)ln⁡(2x−1)−x+C\int\ln(2x-1)dx=x\ln(2x-1)-\int2x/(2x-1)dx=x\ln(2x-1)-x-\tfrac12\ln(2x-1)+C=(x-\tfrac12)\ln(2x-1)-x+C, for x>1/2x>1/2.

(ii) Reflect only the negative logarithm branch

The absolute-value graph has domain x>1/2x>1/2 and vertical asymptote x=1/2x=1/2. It decreases to the corner (1,0)(1,0), then increases; there is no y-intercept. For 1/2<x<11/2<x<1 it is −ln⁡(2x−1)-\ln(2x-1); for x≥1x\ge1 it is ln⁡(2x−1)\ln(2x-1). The rendered source has modulus bars in (ii) and (iii), which extraction omits; (iv) uses the ordinary positive logarithm on its stated interval.

(iii) Split at the logarithm zero

Writing F(x)=(x−12)ln⁡(2x−1)−xF(x)=(x-\tfrac12)\ln(2x-1)-x, the area is −[F]3/41+[F]13/2=34ln⁡2−14-[F]_{3/4}^1+[F]_1^{3/2}=\tfrac34\ln2-\tfrac14 square units.

(iv) Use the enclosing cylinder subtraction

At height yy, the curve has x=(ey+1)/2x=(e^y+1)/2. The source setup is V=9πln⁡5−(9π/4)ln⁡2−π∫ln⁡2ln⁡5[(ey+1)/2]2dyV=9\pi\ln5-(9\pi/4)\ln2-\pi\int_{\ln2}^{\ln5}[(e^y+1)/2]^2dy. Equivalently shells give 2π∫3/23xln⁡(2x−1)dx2\pi\int_{3/2}^3x\ln(2x-1)dx. Evaluation gives π[354ln⁡5−2ln⁡2−338]≈26.9\pi[\tfrac{35}4\ln5-2\ln2-\tfrac{33}8]\approx26.9 cubic units (3 s.f.).
