Answer

Possible finite limits 3,43,4; in 3<xn<43<x_n<4, xn+1<xnx_{n+1}<x_n. An initial term in that interval leads to limit 33.

(i) Find the possible finite limits

If the sequence converges to a finite limit ss, the recurrence gives s=12/(7−s)s=12/(7-s), hence s2−7s+12=(s−3)(s−4)=0s^2-7s+12=(s-3)(s-4)=0 and s=3s=3 or 44. A limit s=7s=7 is impossible because the next term would become unbounded. Without an initial value or a convergence argument, these are candidate limits, not a proof that every iteration converges.

(ii) Retain the source difference-graph argument

Let h(x)=12/(7−x)−xh(x)=12/(7-x)-x. The source sketch has zeros at 3,43,4, a vertical asymptote x=7x=7, and a shallow negative minimum near (3.54,−0.0718)(3.54,-0.0718). The exact minimum on the left branch is (7−23,43−7)(7-2\sqrt3,4\sqrt3-7). The graph is below zero for 3<x<43<x<4, so h(xn)=xn+1−xn<0h(x_n)=x_{n+1}-x_n<0.

(ii) Verify the sign algebraically and clarify the interval case

h(x)=(x2−7x+12)/(7−x)=(x−3)(x−4)/(7−x)h(x)=(x^2-7x+12)/(7-x)=(x-3)(x-4)/(7-x). In (3,4)(3,4) the numerator is negative and denominator positive, proving strict decrease. Also 3<12/(7−x)<43<12/(7-x)<4 there. Thus if 3<x1<43<x_1<4, the terms remain in that interval, decrease and are bounded below by 33; their actual limit is 33. The constant sequence xn=4x_n=4 provides the other fixed-point limit.

Two panels show h(x)=12/(7−x)−x: the overview retains vertical asymptote x=7 and both branches, while a zoom shows zeros 3,4 and negative minimum (7−2sqrt(3),4sqrt(3)−7) between them.
