Trace and reflect two rays inside a cuboid

The closed cuboid has OA = 12 cm, OC = 10 cm, OE = 5 cm. O is the origin; perpendicular unit vectors i,j,k are parallel to OA, OC, OE. Vertex order is as in the diagram.

A yellow ray starts at O in direction i+2j+2k\mathbf i+2\mathbf j+2\mathbf k. A blue ray starts at A and passes through H on ED with EH:ED=2:5.

(i) Will the yellow and blue paths cross? Explain clearly. marks

(ii) Find the angle between the blue ray and plane DEFG. marks

(iii) Find X where the yellow ray meets DEFG. marks

(iv) DEFG is reflective. The yellow ray reflects and meets OABC at Y. Find the area of triangle OXY. marks

Cuboid OABC as bottom face and EFGD as the corresponding top face: O below E, A below F, B below G, C below D. OA=12 along i, OC=10 along j, OE=5 along k; these axes are perpendicular. Hidden edges OC, CB, CD are dashed. The perspective schematic reproduces all eight source vertices; it is not a metric screen projection. H on ED is added at EH:ED=2:5 for the blue-ray construction.

Answer

No crossing; angle 21.6° or 0.376rad; X=(2.5,5,5); area (OXY)255/225\sqrt5/2 cm²≈28.0 cm².

(i) Parameterise both paths

OA=(12,0,0)OA=(12,0,0), OD=(0,10,5)OD=(0,10,5), and H=(0,4,5), so AH=(−12,4,5)AH=(-12,4,5). Blue:rb=(12,0,0)+λ(−12,4,5)\mathbf r_b=(12,0,0)+\lambda(-12,4,5); yellow:ry=μ(1,2,2)\mathbf r_y=\mu(1,2,2). Use λ,μ≥0 for rays, while the printed source uses real parameters for the supporting lines.

How did this part go?

(i) Check all coordinates

An intersection requires 12−12λ=μ12-12\lambda=\mu, 4λ=2μ4\lambda=2\mu, 5λ=2μ5\lambda=2\mu. The last two force λ=μ=0, contradicting the first equation. Even the supporting lines do not intersect, so the ray paths do not cross.

How did this part go?

(ii) Use the top-face normal

DEFG is z=5, with normal (0,0,5)(0,0,5) or its unit version (0,0,1)(0,0,1). Thus sin⁡θ=∣(−12,4,5)⋅(0,0,1)∣/122+42+52=5/185\sin\theta=|(-12,4,5)\cdot(0,0,1)|/\sqrt{12^2+4^2+5^2}=5/\sqrt{185}. Hence θ=21.6°(1d.p.) or 0.376rad(3s.f.).

How did this part go?

(iii) Reach the top plane

μ(1,2,2)⋅(0,0,1)=5\mu(1,2,2)\cdot(0,0,1)=5 gives 2μ=5, μ=2.5. Hence OX=(2.5,5,5)OX=(2.5,5,5).

How did this part go?

(iv) Reflection geometry and method 1: cross product

Let Z be the foot of X on OABC. Then ZX=(0,0,5)ZX=(0,0,5) and Z=(2.5,5,0). Reflection at horizontal z=5 reverses the vertical ray component, so Y=(5,10,0), with Z the midpoint of OY. Thus area (OXY)=2area⁡(OXZ)=∣ZX×OX∣=252+12.52=255/22\operatorname{area}(OXZ)=|ZX\times OX|=\sqrt{25^2+12.5^2}=25\sqrt5/2 cm², or 28.0 cm²(3s.f.). The printed component matrix reverses the cross-product factors relative to its preceding magnitude expression; either order has the same magnitude.

How did this part go?

(iv) Method 2: base and height

The two right triangles share height XZ=5 and each base has length 2.52+52\sqrt{2.5^2+5^2}. Hence total area=2[12(5)2.52+52]=5125/4=255/22[\frac12(5)\sqrt{2.5^2+5^2}]=5\sqrt{125/4}=25\sqrt5/2 cm².

How did this part go?

Common mistakes

The cuboid’s top plane is z=5. Reflection reverses the vertical component, not the horizontal components.

Solution notes

All 4 asks, both triangle-area methods and all source ray/angle calculations retained. All 8 cuboid vertices reconstructed; H and Y coordinates explain source steps without treating the perspective sketch as metric. Q15 heading starts on PDF 34 but its actual prompt begins PDF 35.
