Test whether a tangent meets the curve again

A curve has x=3t+2x=3t+2, y=t+3/ty=t+3/t, where t≠0t\ne0. Find the tangent at PP where x=11x=11, and determine whether that tangent cuts the curve again. marks

Answer

y=2x/9+14/9y=2x/9+14/9; no second intersection.

Find P and its tangent

dx/dt=3dx/dt=3, dy/dt=1−3/t2dy/dt=1-3/t^2, so dy/dx=1/3−1/t2dy/dx=1/3-1/t^2. At x=11x=11, t=3t=3, P=(11,4)P=(11,4) and the gradient is 2/92/9. The tangent is y−4=(2/9)(x−11)y-4=(2/9)(x-11), or y=2x/9+14/9y=2x/9+14/9.

How did this part go?

Solve for all intersections with that line

Substitute the parametric equations into the tangent: t+3/t=2(3t+2)/9+14/9t+3/t=2(3t+2)/9+14/9. Since t≠0t\ne0, clearing denominators gives 3(t2+3)=t(2t+6)3(t^2+3)=t(2t+6), so t2−6t+9=(t−3)2=0t^2-6t+9=(t-3)^2=0. Only t=3t=3 occurs, and x=3t+2x=3t+2 is one-to-one in tt. Thus the tangent meets the curve only at PP and does not cut it again.

Common mistakes

A repeated root at the tangent point is not another point of intersection.
