Sketch a cycloid and locate a normal intercept

Curve CC has x=θ−sin⁡θx=\theta-\sin\theta, y=1−cos⁡θy=1-\cos\theta, 0≤θ≤2π0\le\theta\le2\pi.

(i) Show that dy/dx=cot⁡(θ/2)dy/dx=\cot(\theta/2) and find the gradient at θ=π\theta=\pi. Describe the tangents as θ→0\theta\to0 and θ→2π\theta\to2\pi.

(ii) Sketch CC, clearly showing its features at θ=0,π,2π\theta=0,\pi,2\pi.

(iii) For PP with parameter pp, 0<p<π/20<p<\pi/2, show that the normal at PP crosses the x-axis at (p,0)(p,0).

Keep the trigonometric range and solve an intersection exactly

(a) Find the cartesian equation for x=cos⁡θx=\cos\theta, y=2sin⁡2θy=2\sin^2\theta. [2]

(b) A curve has x=t3+tx=t^3+t, y=2t−1y=2t-1, −1≤t≤1-1\le t\le1.

(i) Sketch the curve, indicating its axial intercepts. [3]

(ii) Without using a calculator, find its intersection with y=12y=\tfrac12. [2]

Differentiate a rational and logarithmic parametrisation

A curve has x=t/(1+t)x=t/(1+t), y=ln⁡(cos⁡t)y=\ln(\cos t), where the printed exclusions are t≠−1,π/2t\ne-1,\pi/2. Find dy/dxdy/dx in terms of tt. [3]
