One of the roots of the equation z4−z3+4z2+3z+p=0z^4-z^3+4z^2+3z+p=0 is 1−2i1-2i, where pp is a constant.

    (i) A student says that “One of the other roots must be 1+2i1+2i.” Explain why this statement is not entirely correct.

(ii) Determine the value of pp.

(iii) Find the exact values of all the other roots of the equation.

Write down the real root of w3+8=0w^3+8=0, where ww is a complex number.

Hence, find the other roots of w3+8=0w^3+8=0 in exact form.

    Deduce the roots of w4+w3+8w+8=0w^4+w^3+8w+8=0.

  3. 9

The point AA represents a fixed complex number aa where π/4<arg⁡(a)<π/2\pi/4<\arg(a)<\pi/2. The complex numbers −ia-ia and −a-a are represented by the points BB and CC respectively.

On a single clearly labelled Argand diagram, mark the points AA, BB and CC.

    Describe the geometrical relationship between

    (a) AA and BB, and

    (b) AA and CC.

  4. 10

    Let z=−1−3iz=-1-\sqrt3i.

    (i) State the value of ∣−1−3i∣|-1-\sqrt3i| and arg⁡(−1−3i)\arg(-1-\sqrt3i).

(ii) Give the geometrical meanings of the statements “∣−1−3i∣|-1-\sqrt3i|” and “arg⁡(−1−3i)\arg(-1-\sqrt3i)”.

Let z=2+i3−iz=\dfrac{2+i}{3-i}. Without using a calculator, find the real and imaginary parts of

    (a) 1+z1−z\dfrac{1+z}{1-z},

    (b) z+1zz+\dfrac1z.

Hence, find the modulus and argument of 1+z1−z\dfrac{1+z}{1-z} and z+1zz+\dfrac1z.
