A piecewise inverse and two identity domains

The function ff is defined by

f:x↦{cos⁡(πx/2),0≤x<1,1−x,1≤x≤2.f:x\mapsto\begin{cases}\cos(\pi x/2),&0\leq x<1,\\1-x,&1\leq x\leq2.\end{cases}

(i) Sketch the graph of ff, indicating clearly the coordinates of the axial intercepts and endpoints.

(ii) Show that ff has an inverse, and define it in similar form.

(iii) Find the range of values of xx for which ff−1(x)=f−1f(x)ff^{-1}(x)=f^{-1}f(x).

(iv) The function gg is defined by g:x↦exg:x\mapsto e^x, 0≤x≤ln⁡20\leq x\leq\ln2.

Find the range of fgfg.

Check whole-domain composition before finding its range

The functions ff and gg are defined by

f:x↦sin⁡(x+π4)f:x\mapsto\sin\left(x+\dfrac\pi4\right), x∈Rx\in\mathbb R, −π2≤x≤π2-\dfrac\pi2\leq x\leq\dfrac\pi2,

g:x↦ln⁡(2−x)g:x\mapsto\ln(2-x), x∈Rx\in\mathbb R, x<2x<2.

Explain whether the following composite function exist

(a) gfgf

(b) fgfg

If the composite function exists, determine the rule, domain and range. [5]

Invert an exponential and distinguish a composite from a square

(a) The functions ff and gg are defined by

f:x↦e1−x2f:x\mapsto e^{1-x^2}, x>0x>0,

g:x↦1+xxg:x\mapsto\dfrac{1+x}{x}, x>0x>0.

(i) Find, in a similar form, f−1f^{-1} and g2g^2. [6]

(ii) Sketch the graph of g2g^2 and write down the range of values of mm such that g2(x)=mx+2g^2(x)=mx+2 has no real roots for x>0x>0. [3]

(b) The functions hh and kk, each with domain R\mathbb R, are such that

h:x↦(x−1)2+5h:x\mapsto(x-1)^2+5,

kh:x↦2x2−4x+15kh:x\mapsto2x^2-4x+15.
