Follow the order and the reached range

For f(x)=2x+1f(x)=2x+1 and g(x)=x2−3g(x)=x^2-3, both on R\mathbb R, can you find gf(2)gf(2)? Next let f(x)=x2f(x)=x^2 on {3,4,5}\{3,4,5\} and g(x)=x+2g(x)=x+2 on {2,3}\{2,3\}. What is the rule of fgfg? State its domain and range. Finally, state the condition for gfgf to exist.

A self-inverse map and a restricted modulus inverse

A function ff is said to be self-inverse if f(x)=f−1(x)f(x)=f^{-1}(x) for all xx in its domain. The functions are defined by f:x↦7−3x3−xf:x\mapsto\dfrac{7-3x}{3-x}, x∈Rx\in\mathbb R, x≠3x\ne3, and g:x↦∣(2−x)(1+x)∣g:x\mapsto|(2-x)(1+x)|, x∈Rx\in\mathbb R, x≤−1x\le-1. (i) Explain why f−1f^{-1} exists and show that ff is self-inverse. Hence, or otherwise, evaluate f2003(5)f^{2003}(5). (ii) Find an expression for g−1(x)g^{-1}(x). (iii) Sketch gg and g−1g^{-1} on the same diagram, illustrating their relationship and labelling axial intercepts, if any. Write down the set of values of xx satisfying gg−1(x)=xgg^{-1}(x)=x. (iv) Show that fg−1fg^{-1} exists and find its exact range.

Why one order works and the other does not

Open question

The functions ff and gg are defined as

f(x)=1−x2f(x)=1-x^2, x∈Rx\in\mathbb R, −1≤x≤1-1\leq x\leq1,

g(x)=x+2g(x)=\sqrt{x}+2, x∈Rx\in\mathbb R, x≥0x\geq0.

(i) Show that the function gfgf exists.

(ii) Define the function gfgf and sketch the graph of gfgf, stating the range of gfgf.

(iii) Explain why fgfg does not exist.

An absolute-value restriction and a composite range

Functions ff, gg and hh are defined by

f:x↦∣x2−6x+5∣f:x\mapsto|x^2-6x+5| for x∈Rx\in\mathbb R, 2≤x≤62\leq x\leq6,

g:x↦ln⁡(x2)g:x\mapsto\ln(x^2) for x∈Rx\in\mathbb R, x≠0x\ne0,

h:x↦12−xh:x\mapsto\dfrac1{2-x} for x∈Rx\in\mathbb R, x≤32x\leq\dfrac32.

(i) Give a reason why ff does not have an inverse.

(ii) State the longest possible interval in the domain of ff, to which the restriction of ff would have an inverse. Hence, define f−1f^{-1} in similar form for function ff restricted to this interval.

(iii) Show that the composite function ghgh exists.

(iv) Determine the exact range of function ghgh.

A rational function that is its own inverse

The function ff is defined by f:x↦axbx−af:x\mapsto\dfrac{ax}{bx-a} for x∈Rx\in\mathbb R, x≠abx\ne\dfrac ab, where aa and bb are non-zero constants.

(i) Find f−1(x)f^{-1}(x). Hence or otherwise find f2(x)f^2(x) and state the range of f2f^2.

(ii) The function gg is defined by g:x↦1xg:x\mapsto\dfrac1x for all real non-zero xx.

State whether the composite function fgfg exists, justifying your answer.

(iii) Solve the equation f−1(x)=xf^{-1}(x)=x.
