A curve with one horizontal and one vertical tangent

The point moves with θ. Jump to the special points.

Position along the curve(1.5708, 1.5708)θ = 1.5708
Try an example
Tangent gradient
0
Normal gradient
vertical

θ=π2\theta=\frac\pi2: dydθ=0\frac{dy}{d\theta}=0, so the tangent is horizontal.

The tangent is horizontal and the normal is vertical. Both axes use equal scales.

  • Parametric curve
  • Tangent
  • Normal
  • A right angle between the tangent and normal when the guide is enabled
Key idea

For parametric curves, horizontal tangents come from dydθ=0\frac{dy}{d\theta}=0 and vertical tangents from dxdθ=0\frac{dx}{d\theta}=0.

Ideas to try
  1. Find the two places where the tangent is horizontal or vertical.
  2. What is the gradient at the start θ=0\theta=0?
