When can a conjugate root be assumed?

One of the roots of the equation z4−z3+4z2+3z+p=0z^4-z^3+4z^2+3z+p=0 is 1−2i1-2i, where pp is a constant.

(i) A student says that “One of the other roots must be 1+2i1+2i.” Explain why this statement is not entirely correct.

(ii) Determine the value of pp.

(iii) Find the exact values of all the other roots of the equation.

Answer

(i) Reality of p has not yet been established. (ii) p=5p=5. (iii) 1+2i1+2i, (−1±i3)/2(-1\pm i\sqrt3)/2.

(i)

The source explanation is that pp may not be real: the question has not yet stated or established that every coefficient is real. Therefore the conjugate-root theorem cannot yet be invoked on that premise. This concerns the justification at this stage; part (ii) will establish that this particular p is real.

How did this part go?

(ii)

Substitute 1−2i1-2i. Its square is −3−4i-3-4i, its cube is −11+2i-11+2i and its fourth power is −7+24i-7+24i. Thus (−7+24i)−(−11+2i)+4(−3−4i)+3−6i+p=0(-7+24i)-(-11+2i)+4(-3-4i)+3-6i+p=0, giving −5+p=0-5+p=0. Hence p=5p=5.

(iii)

Now all coefficients are real, so 1+2i1+2i is a root. The conjugate factors multiply to (z−1−2i)(z−1+2i)=(z−1)2−(2i)2=z2−2z+5(z-1-2i)(z-1+2i)=(z-1)^2-(2i)^2=z^2-2z+5. Write the remaining factor as z2+Az+Bz^2+Az+B. The constant coefficient gives B=1B=1; the cubic coefficient gives A−2=−1A-2=-1, so A=1A=1. Hence (z2−2z+5)(z2+z+1)=0(z^2-2z+5)(z^2+z+1)=0. Solving z2+z+1=0z^2+z+1=0 gives (−1±i3)/2(-1\pm i\sqrt3)/2. The other roots are 1+2i1+2i, (−1+i3)/2(-1+i\sqrt3)/2 and (−1−i3)/2(-1-i\sqrt3)/2.

Common mistakes

The printed criticism is about an unstated premise; after substitution, the student’s proposed root is indeed valid.

Solution notes

The source says “p may not be real” in (i). Because the given root actually forces p=5, the student’s conclusion is true for this polynomial; the missing step is the proof that p is real. This logical qualification is retained rather than claiming the root is false.
