Graphing techniques

Explore

Compare the original rules y=2+c/(x−1)y=2+c/(x-1) for c=5c=5, c=−5c=-5 and c=0c=0, retaining x≠1x\ne1 in every case. Before graphing, predict the side of y=2y=2 on which each branch lies, the behaviour near x=1x=1 and the intercepts. Use a wide view and a close view near x=1x=1, then explain which features your screen supports and which require the algebra. For c=0c=0, decide why an excluded point remains even though there is no unbounded branch.

Two rising branches

y = x − 1 − 2/(x − 2), with b = −3a and a = 1.

Switch on a feature to add it to the sketch and see how it is found. A full-mark sketch shows all of them.

  • C
  • Oblique asymptote y = a(x − 1)
  • Axis intercepts
