Distinguish internal division from a line produced

Given that a\mathbf a and b\mathbf b are the position vectors of AA and BB respectively relative to origin OO, find, in terms of a,b\mathbf a,\mathbf b, the position vectors of: (i) PP which divides ABAB in the ratio 3:73:7; (ii) RR on BABA produced such that AR/BR=2/7AR/BR=2/7; (iii) QQ on ABAB produced such that AQ/BQ=7/3AQ/BQ=7/3.

Locate internal and external division points in coordinates

Given the line segment ABAB, where A(3,1,2)A(3,1,2) and B(2,3,5)B(2,3,5), find the coordinates of PP on (i) ABAB with AP:PB=2:3AP:PB=2:3; (ii) ABAB produced with AP:PB=2:1AP:PB=2:1.

Find an intersection by comparing independent coefficients

Nonzero, nonparallel vectors a,b\mathbf a,\mathbf b are the position vectors of A,BA,B relative to OO. PP is the midpoint of ABAB and QQ is the midpoint of OPOP. The line AQAQ produced cuts OBOB at RR. Find, in terms of a,b\mathbf a,\mathbf b, (i) the position vector of QQ relative to OO and (ii) AQ→\overrightarrow{AQ}. Prove that OR→=13b\overrightarrow{OR}=\tfrac13\mathbf b and find AQ:QRAQ:QR.

Prove the three medians meet at the centroid

Self-Reading: A Special Point of a Triangle — The Centroid. Choose one vertex of a triangle as origin OO, with the other vertices A,BA,B.

A median joins a vertex to the midpoint of the opposite side; AMAM is the median from AA. Let GG be the intersection of the medians from AA and BB.

(i) Express the position vector of GG in terms of the position vectors of A,BA,B.

(ii) Determine AG:GMAG:GM.

(iii) Show that GG also lies on the median from OO.

Evaluate one scalar product in two ways

Given a=(121)\mathbf a=\begin{pmatrix}1\\2\\1\end{pmatrix} and b=(23−1)\mathbf b=\begin{pmatrix}2\\3\\-1\end{pmatrix}, find (3a−b)⋅(2a+b)(3\mathbf a-\mathbf b)\cdot(2\mathbf a+\mathbf b).

Practise componentwise scalar products

If a=i+4j−k\mathbf a=\mathbf i+4\mathbf j-\mathbf k, b=i−j+3k\mathbf b=\mathbf i-\mathbf j+3\mathbf k and c=2i+j−5k\mathbf c=2\mathbf i+\mathbf j-5\mathbf k, find (i) a⋅c\mathbf a\cdot\mathbf c and (ii) (2a+3b)⋅c(2\mathbf a+3\mathbf b)\cdot\mathbf c.
