Expand dot products using magnitudes and an angle

Given ∣a∣=4|\mathbf a|=4, ∣b∣=5|\mathbf b|=5 and the angle between a\mathbf a and b\mathbf b is 45∘45^\circ, find the exact values of the following:

(i) a⋅b\mathbf a\cdot\mathbf b

(ii) (4a+2b)⋅(3a−b)(4\mathbf a+2\mathbf b)\cdot(3\mathbf a-\mathbf b)

(iii) ∣a−b∣2|\mathbf a-\mathbf b|^2

Prove a projection formula in two ways

The angle between two unit vectors a\mathbf a and b\mathbf b is θ\theta.

By expanding the scalar product, show that (3a−b)⋅(a+3b)=8cos⁡θ(3\mathbf a-\mathbf b)\cdot(\mathbf a+3\mathbf b)=8\cos\theta.

Given that θ=60∘\theta=60^\circ, show that the length of projection of (3a−b)(3\mathbf a-\mathbf b) onto (a+3b)(\mathbf a+3\mathbf b) is 413\dfrac4{\sqrt{13}}.

Find a normal unit vector and direction cosines

AA, BB and CC are points (0,1,2)(0,1,2), (3,2,1)(3,2,1) and (1,−1,0)(1,-1,0) respectively.

(i) Find the unit vector perpendicular to both AB→\overrightarrow{AB} and AC→\overrightarrow{AC}.

(ii) Find the cosine of the angles that OB→\overrightarrow{OB} makes with the x-, y- and z-axis.

Reflect the origin across an equal-radius chord

The points AA and BB have position vectors a\mathbf a and b\mathbf b respectively, relative to the origin OO such that ∣a∣=∣b∣|\mathbf a|=|\mathbf b|. The point PP with position vector p\mathbf p lies on ABAB such that b⋅p=a⋅p\mathbf b\cdot\mathbf p=\mathbf a\cdot\mathbf p.

(i) Show that AB→\overrightarrow{AB} is perpendicular to OP→\overrightarrow{OP}.

(ii) Determine the position vector of the point DD in terms of a\mathbf a and b\mathbf b, where DD is the reflection of OO about the line ABAB.

(iii) Give the geometrical meaning of ∣a×b∣|\mathbf a\times\mathbf b|.
