Walk a fixed distance in a vector’s direction

Alice walks 5 units in the direction of p\mathbf p. She then walks 3 units in the direction of q\mathbf q. What is the expression of the resultant vector with reference to her starting point? (p\mathbf p and q\mathbf q are non-parallel vectors.)

(a) 5p^+3q^5\widehat{\mathbf p}+3\widehat{\mathbf q}; (b) 5p+3q5\mathbf p+3\mathbf q; (c) no difference.

Find a position vector, its modulus and scaled directions

A point AA has coordinates (1,2,3)(1,2,3). Find (i) OA→\overrightarrow{OA}, (ii) ∣OA→∣\lvert\overrightarrow{OA}\rvert, (iii) the unit direction vector in the direction of OA→\overrightarrow{OA}, and (iv) a vector with magnitude 4 units in that direction.

Prove collinearity from two proportional displacements

O,A,B,CO,A,B,C are four distinct points with OA→=10a\overrightarrow{OA}=10\mathbf a, OB→=5b\overrightarrow{OB}=5\mathbf b and OC→=4a+3b\overrightarrow{OC}=4\mathbf a+3\mathbf b. Show that A,B,CA,B,C are collinear.

Calculate displacements and recognise a parallelogram

The position vectors of A,B,C,DA,B,C,D are (−14−3)\begin{pmatrix}-1\\4\\-3\end{pmatrix}, (15−2)\begin{pmatrix}1\\5\\-2\end{pmatrix}, (570)\begin{pmatrix}5\\7\\0\end{pmatrix} and (211)\begin{pmatrix}2\\1\\1\end{pmatrix} respectively. Evaluate (i) AB→\overrightarrow{AB}, (ii) BC→\overrightarrow{BC}, (iii) 2AB→2\overrightarrow{AB}, (iv) DB→\overrightarrow{DB}. Hence or otherwise determine (v) whether A,B,C are collinear and (vi) the shape of O,A,B,D.
