Printed question

The curve C1C_1 with equation y=(x+2)2x+1y=\frac{(x+2)^2}{x+1} is transformed onto the curve C2C_2 with equation y=f(x)y=f(x). The curve C1C_1 has a minimum turning point (0,4)(0,4) which corresponds to the point with coordinates (a,b)(a,b) on the curve C2C_2, where a,b>0a,b>0. Given that f(x)f(x) has the form p2x2px−1+q\frac{p^2x^2}{px-1}+q, where p,qp,q are positive constants, express p,qp,q in terms of a,ba,b. [4]

Printed working

y=(x+2)2x+1→x↦x−2y=x2x−1y=\frac{(x+2)^2}{x+1}\xrightarrow{x\mapsto x-2}y=\frac{x^2}{x-1} (Translation of 2 units in the positive xx-direction).

→x↦pxy=(px)2px−1=p2x2px−1\xrightarrow{x\mapsto px}y=\frac{(px)^2}{px-1}=\frac{p^2x^2}{px-1} (Scaling parallel to xx-axis by factor 1p\frac1p).

→y↦y−qy=p2x2px−1+q\xrightarrow{y\mapsto y-q}y=\frac{p^2x^2}{px-1}+q (Translation of qq units in the positive yy-direction).

The minimum turning point on C1C_1, (0,4)(0,4) corresponds to (a,b)(a,b) on C2C_2.

Hence a=1p(0+2)⇒p=2aa=\frac1p(0+2)\Rightarrow p=\frac2a; b=4+q⇒q=b−4b=4+q\Rightarrow q=b-4.

Printed answer key

p=2ap=\frac2a; q=b−4q=b-4.
